The Royal Wedding was celebrated on the Avenue by a Street Party. The food was fantastic - everyone shared their contribution:

The guests of honour were our senior residents Hugh and Maura Spink who cut the wedding cake, made in their image by Anna Ainsworth. It was superb.

Thanks to the Ainsworths and Jean Smith for all their organisation and again to the Ainsworths for organising a piano party in their home later that evening.

The Safari Supper was held on Saturday 12th February 2011 and, as ever, was a huge success. Once again thanks go to Mary Clare Ainsworth and Sue Smith for the amazing organisation.

 

LETTER FROM AUSTRALIA - Does anyone remember Gwen at number 6?

Hello from Australia
We moved into the above address in , I think 1987. We were the second occupants and loved living there. I must admit you seem to have a more communal thing going on now.
My memories are of wintertime, leaving the car on the road in case of thick ice on the drive, my eldest son Philip remembers having to go to the end of the road (outside Buntings' house) for grit  to sprinkle on the corner as I was terrified of losing control as I drove my 3 children to school in Bury.
It was a very special place to live and I was sad to leave when we moved to Brisbane Australia in Sept 1993. But life has been great here, justifying grabbing your chances as they arise.
I doubt there are any residents who remember us, but on my occasional trips back I always have a drive up Union Rd and look at the old home.

The new year recorded the loss of another neighbour and we all regret the passing of George Raynor. £1000 from the Lower Cribden Avenue Millennium Fund was donated in memory of George to 'Combat Stress', the UK's leading Military Charity specialising in the care of Veterans' mental health. Please look at the charity's web site to learn more about this worthy cause that was close to George's heart as his friend was the MD of the Charity.

Christmas Hamper for Cornerstones

Another hamper went from the residents of Lower Cribden Avenue to Cornerstones this Christmas. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day around 150 people have a free Christmas traditional lunch at Cornerstones.

Cornerstones is located about 2km from Manchester City Centre and offers hot and cold beverages, snacks, a cooked mid-day meal, shower facilities, good as new clothing ; television, telephone and recreational facilites for people suffering from homelessness, social isolation, disabilites and addictions.

The aim of the centre is to bring people off the street, feed them and assist them with dignity during their recovery. Between 175 and 200 people attend the centre each weekday. Cornerstones is staffed by a team of six and supported by almost 100 volunteers.

The Project receives no statutory funding and is therefore reliant on a small number of trusts and the overwhelming generosity of personal donors.

Cornerstones welcomes donations of tins of meat, fish, vegetables or soup. Jam, marmalade, biscuits, tea bags, coffee or sugar. Toilet rolls, soap, deoderant. Detergent, washing up liquid. Good quality used clothing.

New ideas

We're still waiting to start a recipe corner as suggested by Emma Collins, but no one has sent in any recipes!

Louise would like to see a list of recommended companies ie plumbers/electricians/painters/odd job men/gardeners/joiners etc. Seems like a good idea. There have been plenty of workmen on the Avenue recently - who do you recommend? Please email me at jmdevents@btinternet.com with your recommendations or ideas for this page.
